The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Zaria (FUEZ), Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure, has called on members of the university community to remain vigilant and actively contribute to maintaining security within and around the institution’s campus.
A statement from the University said Professor Bunkure made the call during a University Community Meeting held at the Dr. A.A. Ladan Hall today Thursday, June 11, 2026.
He expressed concern over the recent theft of electrical wiring and fittings at the TECETEL Centre of Excellence, describing the incident as unfortunate and a threat to the institution’s infrastructure.
The Vice-Chancellor therefore appealed for the support and cooperation of both the university community and neighbouring host communities, including Gyallesu and Unguwan Kaya, in promptly reporting suspicious activities to management and security agencies to safeguard lives and property within and around the campus.
In his remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Suleiman Balarabe, urged staff and students to make security consciousness an integral part of their daily lives in order to enhance safety across the institution.
Professor Balarabe, who also serves as Chairman of the University’s Security Committee, announced plans to reintroduce monthly security committee meetings involving the university and its host communities as part of efforts to strengthen security within and around the campus.
He further called on the institution’s in-house unions—ASUU, SSANU, and NASU—as well as the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), to treat security as a collective responsibility and a standing priority in the protection of lives and property.
According to Professor Balarabe, the security challenges currently facing the institution are not peculiar to FUEZ but reflect a broader national concern. He noted that the incidents should not be viewed as acts of sabotage but rather as part of the wider security challenges confronting the country.
He therefore appealed for the continued cooperation and support of all stakeholders toward ensuring a safer and more secure university environment.
Earlier, the Director of Security Services, Halilu Hassan, highlighted several security measures and practical safety tips that members of the university community should adopt to enhance security on campus and beyond.
The meeting also featured questions, observations, and suggestions from participants, to which the Vice-Chancellor responded.
