The Commander Headquarters Sector 2, Joint Task Force (JTF) North-East (NE), Operation HADIN KAI, Brigadier General Edet Effiong, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
A statement signed by Lieutenant Absolom Kandala Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations Headquarters Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North-East) Operation HADIN KAI said he made this statement during a courtesy visit by Head of Operations ICRC, Mr. Yannick Buchli, at the Sector Headquarters in Damaturu, Yobe State on Tuesday, 16 June 2026.
Brig Gen Effiong acknowledged the vital role of the ICRC in humanitarian operations across conflict zones. He expressed appreciation for the organization’s mandate, emphasizing the importance of neutrality, impartiality, and respect for humanitarian principles. He further assured that military operations under Operation HADIN KAI will continue to align with international humanitarian law, ensuring that humanitarian assistance is never obstructed.
The Commander also proposed the establishment of a regular liaison mechanism or working group to address emerging challenges collaboratively, reinforcing the shared commitment to protecting civilians and upholding humanitarian law. He reassured the ICRC that the sector will provide necessary safe passage and deconfliction measures to safeguard ICRC staff and assets.
In his remarks, Mr. Yannick commended the Nigerian Army for its continued support in the fight against terrorism. He stressed the importance of military humanitarian cooperation in addressing the needs of vulnerable communities affected by insurgency. He further highlighted the ICRC’s ongoing humanitarian projects in the Northeast, including medical assistance, support for displaced persons, and programs aimed at restoring family links. He emphasized that such collaboration is essential to restoring hope and dignity to those most impacted by conflict, and reaffirmed the ICRC’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with the Nigerian Army to ensure humanitarian principles are upheld at all times.
This engagement underscores the growing synergy between the Nigerian military and humanitarian organizations, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering peace, stability, and the protection of human dignity in Yobe State and Northeast region at large. A key highlight of the event was the signing of the visitors’ book, the presentation of souvenirs, and a group photograph, all symbolizing the strengthened partnership and mutual resolve to advance humanitarian collaboration.
