Stakeholders in public health sector are brainstorming on strengthening public health emergency preparedness and response through multi-hazard risk assessment and planning for Adamawa state.
Declaring the 5-day training workshop open in Yola,the Adamawa state capital yesterday,Commissioner of Health and Human services, Hon. Muhammad Chubado Jada expressed gratitude for the opportunity given to the state to formulate a working document as it relates public health emergency and response.
Represented by the permanent secretary Pharmacist Zira Mathias Babani, Jada said that the participants need to be very active with a view to promotion of policies aimed at protecting lives of the citizens.
UNICEF’s Health Specialist, Dr.Eghe Abe explained that the participants in the five day training workshop were drawn from relevant government lined ministries incl uding;Health, Water Resources, Environm ent security,Agric Unicef, other relevant non governmental partners, as well as National centre for Disease Control,NCD C.
Dr.Abe said the training seek to identify and prioritize multi-hazard risk emergen cies and the best professional methods to manage them through planning noting that public health emergencies are becoming more frequent due to disease outbreaks and climate change.
Abe emphasized that the UNICEF is supporting the Adamawa state government with development in multi-hazard risk assessment framework to help in identifying those multiple hazards that occur time to time adding that the intervention is in collaboration with the federal, state government with funding support from the United States governm ent through UNICEF.
According to him, the risk hazard can be biological, chemical, environmental and security wise such as cholera, Measles, Ebola, Convid 19, flooding, Erosion,confl icts, banditry,terrorism among others.
In their separate remarks, Dr Muntari Hassan of NCDC and Kadabiyu Jones, the Adamawa state epidemiologist opined that the intervention was timely to its effectiveness and efficiency in tackling public health hazards through provision of proactive responses and planning.
They reiterated that the new proposed document if concluded will give the state a guiding principle for quick identification,assessment, preparedness and response on emergencies.
“The workshop seeks to identify, describe, and prioritize multi-hazard risks that can trigger sub-national health emergencies; assess Adamawa State capacity to manage concurrent emergencies, including infrastructure, human resources, and system functionality”. They highlighted.
