As part of activities marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026, Operation ATILEYIN ALAFIA II on 23 June 2026 officially commenced its Inter-Company Sports Competition at the Operation’s Base Camp in Togbin, Cotonou, Republic of Benin.

In his welcome address, the Commanding Officer, Operation ATILEYIN ALAFIA II, Lieutenant Colonel AA Ikoro, highlighted the importance of sports in promoting physical fitness, teamwork, discipline and esprit de corps among troops. He noted that the competition was designed to foster unity and healthy rivalry among participating companies while enhancing operational effectiveness through physical and mental well-being.

The Special Guest of Honour (SGOH), Colonel SA Yahaya, Defence Attaché of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Republic of Benin, commended the initiative and encouraged participants to exhibit sportsmanship and fair play throughout the competition. He further emphasized the importance of maintaining physical fitness as a critical component of military professionalism and operational readiness.

Thereafter, the SGOH performed the ceremonial first kick of the football, officially declaring the competition open.

The three-day sporting event features both indoor and outdoor games, including 5-aside football, volleyball, whot, ludo and draught competitions. Participating teams drawn from the various companies are expected to compete keenly for honours while strengthening camaraderie, teamwork and cohesion within the operation.

The competition forms part of activities lined up to commemorate NADCEL 2026, an annual event celebrated on 6 July to mark the establishment, sacrifices and achievements of the Nigerian Army in service to the nation.
