    The Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu on Thursday 25 June 2026 commissioned the renovated 5 Blocks of 30 Families Corporal and Below Quarters at TA Lagbaja Cantonment, Lagos, reaffirming the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its personnel through the Chief of Army Staff’s Soldiers First Culture.

    This was contained in a statement signed by Major Akinola Ajibola assistant director army public relations, headquarters 9 brigade Nigerian army issued to newsmen.

    It said the accommodation project was initiated through the visionary leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General OO Oluyede, while serving as the Chief of Army Staff. The project was subsequently completed under the leadership of the current Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General W Shaibu, as part of his sustained commitment to the Soldiers First Culture, which prioritises the welfare, well-being and operational effectiveness of officers and soldiers.

    Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the representative of the COAS Major General ST Shafaru commended the Chief of Defence Staff, General OO Oluyede, for facilitating the project during his tenure as COAS. He also applauded the COAS, Lieutenant General W Shaibu, for ensuring the successful completion of the project, describing the renovated quarters as another significant milestone in improving the living conditions of personnel and their families.

    The Commander Corps of Engineers noted that quality accommodation remains a fundamental component of troops welfare and morale, stressing that the newly renovated quarters would provide a more conducive environment for soldiers to perform their constitutional responsibilities with greater commitment and professionalism. He urged the beneficiaries to maintain the facilities and safeguard the investment for future generations of personnel.

    Earlier, the Commander 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General AO Owolabi, welcomed the Commander Corps of Engineers and other distinguished guests to the cantonment. He expressed profound appreciation to the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Army Staff for their unwavering commitment to improving soldiers’ welfare through the provision and renovation of quality accommodation across the Nigerian Army.

    Brigadier General Owolabi stated that the commissioning of the renovated accommodation is a practical demonstration of the COAS’s Soldiers First Culture, which places the welfare of personnel at the forefront of command priorities while enhancing morale, esprit de corps and operational readiness.

    The ceremony featured the unveiling of the commissioning plaque, inspection of the renovated accommodation, a guided tour of the facilities and group photographs with senior officers, invited guests and beneficiaries of the project.
