Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Thursday flagged off the distribution of 150 trucks of subsidised fertiliser to farmers ahead of the 2026 wet season.

The governor announced a 50 per cent subsidy on the fertiliser. He said a bag sells for N50,000 in the open market but would be sold to farmers at N25,000.

Yusuf said agriculture remained a priority for his administration, adding that consistent fertiliser supply was aimed at ensuring bumper harvests, enhancing food security, and reducing commodity prices.

He said the state had constituted committees at state and local government levels to prevent diversion and ensure the intervention reached genuine beneficiaries.

“We are distributing a total of 150 trucks, containing 90,000 bags of fertiliser, to the 44 local government areas for onward distribution to 484 wards across the state,” he said.

“This translates to an average of three trucks per local government, with each ward having 70 beneficiaries. The market price of each bag of fertiliser is N50,000. However, our administration has subsidised the cost by 50 per cent, translating into N25,000 per bag.

“The purchase of this fertiliser is a joint venture between the Kano State government and the 44 local government councils. In order to ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness, the state has constituted a state distribution committee and local government committees.

“I urge all committee members to carry out this responsibility with sincerity, integrity, and the fear of Allah.”

The governor added that the state had also received 33 trucks of fertiliser from the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu, which he described as a timely intervention.
