The Collapse of the Opposition in Gombe State.

Barely months into the political build up to the 2027 governorship election, the signs are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. From high profile defections and strategic endorsements to the growing inability of opposition parties to present a coherent alternative, Gombe State may be witnessing the imminent collapse of its opposition as a formidable political force.

Politics is ultimately a contest of ideas, credibility, organisation and public confidence. In Gombe State today, however, the opposition appears to be confronting a far more fundamental challenge, its own survival.

As the 2027 governorship election gradually approaches, the state’s political landscape is witnessing an unmistakable trend. Opposition parties are steadily weakening through defections, shrinking grassroots structures and declining political momentum.

One of the clearest examples is the decision of Dr. Ahmed Gana, the former State Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside a large number of his supporters and other party stakeholders, to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in support of the governorship aspiration of Dr. Jamil Isyaku Gwamna. Such a high profile defection is significant because the office of a state secretary is central to a party’s administration, coordination and mobilisation. When officials occupying such strategic positions leave, they often take with them experience, organisational capacity and political networks that are not easily replaced.

This development is not occurring in isolation. In recent months, the APC has continued to attract influential political figures, community leaders and grassroots mobilisers from across the political divide. The endorsement of Dr. Jamil Isyaku Gwamna by prominent Gombe stakeholders at a well attended gathering in Abuja, comprising former ministers, retired military officers, ambassadors, permanent secretaries, academics, captains of industry and young professionals, further underscored the growing momentum behind the ruling party. Such endorsements reinforce the perception that many influential stakeholders see the APC as the strongest political platform heading into 2027.

Similarly, endorsements from respected political figures, including former Deputy Governor Hon. Charles Yau Iliya, as well as the declaration of support by Fulbe leaders from across Gombe State and other community groups, have further strengthened the APC’s political base and reinforced the growing perception that political momentum is shifting decisively in one direction.

Equally significant is the political environment created by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s administration. Supporters of the APC argue that the government’s investments in infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare, rural development and economic empowerment have substantially altered the political conversation. They contend that these achievements have left the opposition with very little to campaign against on the issue of governance, compelling it to rely increasingly on rhetoric rather than presenting a compelling alternative vision.

Perhaps the clearest indication of the opposition’s difficult position is its evolving political messaging. Some opposition figures have publicly declared support for the re election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu while simultaneously asking the electorate to reject the APC at the state level. To many political observers, this appears contradictory and raises an obvious question. If the APC deserves another mandate at the centre, on what basis should voters reject the same political platform in Gombe State?

Beyond the rhetoric, the opposition faces an even greater challenge. Elections are not won on social media alone. They are won through credible candidates, functional party structures, committed grassroots mobilisation, polling unit agents, ward executives, local government coordinators and sustained engagement with the electorate. On the ground in Gombe State, the opposition has yet to demonstrate that it possesses the organisational depth required to compete effectively with the ruling party. While much of its visibility has come from online commentary and social media campaigns, elections are ultimately decided by voters in communities across the state, not by digital conversations alone.

Politics is often driven as much by momentum as by numbers. Once the perception takes hold that one political platform is ascendant while another is in decline, that perception begins to shape political reality. Politicians gravitate towards the platform they believe can win. Community leaders adjust their alliances. Grassroots supporters follow familiar faces. Momentum, once established, becomes increasingly difficult to reverse.

Whether acknowledged or not, it is evident that incumbency, visible government projects and sustained political engagement have strengthened the ruling party’s position across much of the state.

The opposition also faces the challenge of projecting a united and credible alternative. Internal disagreements, shifting political alliances and persistent public debate over the consistency and credibility of some of its leading figures have complicated efforts to build a cohesive platform capable of inspiring widespread public confidence. Elections are won not only by criticising the government but also by presenting a convincing alternative that the electorate can trust.

For any opposition to remain competitive, criticism alone is rarely sufficient. It must present a clear vision, credible leadership, practical policy proposals and a united front capable of convincing voters that it offers a better path. That task becomes considerably more difficult when party structures are weakened by defections, influential stakeholders publicly align with the ruling party and political momentum continues to shift in one direction.

The coming months will determine whether the opposition can reverse its fortunes. Based on current political developments, however, it faces the enormous challenge of rebuilding public confidence, restoring organisational strength and persuading voters that it remains a viable alternative.

Elections are not won on hope alone. They are won through organisation, credibility, momentum and public confidence. Today, the APC appears to possess all four in Gombe State. Unless the opposition can dramatically reverse the current political tide, 2027 may not simply produce another electoral defeat. It may well mark the complete political collapse of the opposition as a competitive force in Gombe State.
