As part of efforts to bridge the gap between academia and industry, the Law Students’ Society, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, held a one-day public lecture and debate competition.
The event was aimed at stimulating policy-oriented discussions on the role of Nigeria’s mining sector in driving economic growth and sustainable national development.
Speaking at the event, Professor. Pascal Ogunno said the session would go a long way in fostering intellectual discourse on the mining sector and promoting informed dialogue among students on issues of national development.
Professor. Pascal urged law students to take their profession seriously and to uphold the principles of the legal profession.
He noted that they have every opportunity to participate in all areas of national development, including the mining sector.
In his remarks, the representative of the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Malam Nasiru Bala, commended the students for their foresight in organizing the lecture, describing it as timely.
He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to continuously improving legal education and producing brilliant graduates who will serve the community effectively.
In his keynote address, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Omar, Managing Director of Steron Group and one of the honourees at the event, said that although Nigeria is not yet widely recognized as a mining country, stakeholders in the sector must continue to push forward by implementing action plans to strengthen its position in the global mineral trade
He commended the Law Society students for organizing the lecture and for recognizing him among Nigerians who have been dedicated to advancing Nigeria’s mining industry, national development, and economic growth.
Earlier in his welcome address, the President of the Law Students’ Society, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Jamilu Bulama Amshi, said the lecture and debate were part of efforts to bridge the gap between academia and industry, as well as to honour individuals making significant contributions to national progress.
The event concluded with a spirited debate among law students on ways to scrutinize and reform Nigeria’s mining sector. It also featured the presentation of awards to special guests and to outstanding members of the Law Students’ Society.
