    * As University Readies Deployment of FUEZ AI – First of Its Kind in Nigeria

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has registered the Federal University of Education, Zaria (FUE Zaria) as a Data Controller/Processor of Major Importance.

A statement signed by Sani Lawal Maqarphy media aide to the VC said the registration, contained in a certificate issued to the University on 27 August 2026, was made pursuant to Section 44 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.

The development comes as the University readies the deployment of FUEZ AI, an institution-wide artificial intelligence platform designed to support teaching, learning and other academic activities.

The platform will provide an AI-powered student support and chat interface for academic enquiries, as well as a faculty dashboard for document uploads and course-related support.

It will also feature a Teaching Practice Intelligence Module (TPIM), developed to support the University’s teacher education mandate.

The module will include a digital teaching practice logbook, AI-assisted lesson plan generation, a micro-teaching preparation simulator, a supervisor observation tool, a weekly reflection system and a subject resource library.

According to the University, FUEZ AI is designed with a secure, institution-specific deployment architecture, with data hosted and handled in line with applicable data protection requirements.

The registration places additional responsibility on the University to ensure the proper handling and protection of institutional data.

Staff, students and affiliated units are therefore advised to observe the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), and applicable cybersecurity directives in the collection, processing, storage and use of institutional data, in leveraging the new technology.
