The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, has approved the appointment of Prof Yakubu Obadaki Yusuf, as the pioneer Director of the institution’s newly established Directorate of Environmental Management.

A statement from the Public Affairs Directorate Office of the VC said Prof Obadaki, former GENS Coordinator, teaches at the Department of Geography and Environmental Management.

His appointment followed the approval by the University Governing Council for the establishment of the Directorate. It is for a term of two years, with effect from 31st August, 2026.

Additionally, Obadaki is to work closely with the Implementation Committee for the Take-off of the Directorate, of which he is also a member.

As the pioneer Director, he is expected to give the Directorate a strong foundation and ensure its smooth, effective, and impactful take-off.

He is to also establish the necessary institutional structures, systems and partnerships, and to develop the Directorate into a professional and results-oriented unit.

The Vice-Chancellor said Obadaki would work with the committee to provide the necessary institutional and operational support required for the successful implementation of the Directorate’s mandate.

However, Obadaki’s membership of the committee is without prejudice to his primary responsibility as Director for the day-to-day operations of the Directorate.

The university is confident that Prof Yakubu Obadaki Yusuf will make the Directorate a model of environmental excellence, climate resilience, sustainability and innovation.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism that the new Director would also ensure that the Directorate’s establishment would result in tangible and measurable improvements in ABU’s physical environment.

Its establishment reflects the university’s determination to strengthen its environmental governance and management, as well as improve sanitation and waste management.

It also reflects its desire to enhance landscaping and the quality of its physical environment, promote climate resilience and sustainability, and ensure environmental compliance, and leverage on emerging opportunities in environmental research, innovation and climate finance.
