The Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives,Dr Tajudeen Abbas has commended the sacrifices being made by Teachers in the country.
He stated this while flagging up the distribution of another set of 500 motorcycles empowerment to Islamiyya and Religious teachers held at Zaria.
The Speaker, who noted that a motorcycle cannot teach a child, added that it can take the teacher who will, stressing that as a former teacher he knows this.
According to him, between 1981 and 1988, he taught in primary schools under the Zaria Local Government Education Department, and knew the sacrifices teachers make – preparing lessons, marking books, guiding children and, for many, battling long distances and rising transport costs just to get to school.
“That is why today’s intervention is not a ceremonial gesture. These motorcycles are working tools” he said.
Dr Tajudeen Abbas also maintained that since assumption of office as Speaker, he has empowered more than 3,000 teachers in Zaria Federal Constituency, including 1,000 motorcycles presented during our 2026 Democracy Day programme.
He explained that the objective is simple: help teachers reach their schools earlier, reduce transportation costs, improve punctuality and ultimately give our children a better chance to learn.
The Speaker said he firmly believed that teacher welfare must be treated as education policy, not an afterthought.
Dr Tajudeen Abbas further said that “We can build schools, provide books and deploy technology, but none can recognise the confusion on a child’s face, encourage a wrong answer or discover hidden talent”.
“Only a teacher can do that” he said
The Speaker said “ for him, this is personal. I came from the classroom, and I will continue to champion the welfare of those who dedicate their lives to building the future of our children”
Some of the beneficiaries both male and female, who spoke to our reporter expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Speaker for coming to their aid and pledged to continue to work harder for the development of educaton in the area.
