The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 1, Joint Task Force, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed Wase, has flagged off the 2026 Inter-Brigade Combat Proficiency Competition of the Division in Kano.
A statement signed by Major Babatunde Zubairu Assistant Director Army Public Relations 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army said the GOC, represented at the opening ceremony by the Chief of Staff, Headquarters 1 Division, Brigadier General Timothy Opurum, described training as a continuous and essential component of military professionalism, stressing that it remains one of the most valuable forms of welfare a commander can provide for troops.
He explained that the competition was designed to support the Chief of Army Staff’s Command Philosophy, which seeks to build a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient Nigerian Army capable of effectively performing its constitutional responsibilities in a joint and multi-agency environment.
Major General Wase charged participating formations to conduct themselves with discipline, loyalty and integrity throughout the competition. He also commended troops deployed on operations across the country for their sacrifices towards maintaining peace and security.
Earlier, the Commander 3 Brigade, Brigadier General Saka Jimoh, said the competition was structured to assess participants’ individual skills, mental alertness, physical fitness and ability to execute assigned tasks accurately under demanding conditions.
The five-day competition features personnel from 1 Division Garrison, Kaduna; 3 Brigade, Kano; and 31 Artillery Brigade, Minna. Participants are competing in various military skills, including weapon handling, combat swimming, map reading and obstacle crossing.
In the opening event, the Stripping and Assembling Competition saw 3 Brigade emerge first, followed by 31 Artillery Brigade, Minna, while 1 Division Garrison, Kaduna, placed third.
