Katsina State has further strengthened its reputation in youth-led climate innovation following a strong participation at the Nigeria Youth Climate Summit held in Abuja.
The state delegation, made up of eight young participants from Katsina, presented an innovative school-based initiative known as EcoTrack, designed to enhance environmental accountability and boost student participation in climate action across schools.
The delegation was facilitated by the Katsina State Climate Change Secretariat in collaboration with the Katsina State Ministry of Environment. It was also supported by key stakeholders and brought together youth voices actively contributing to national climate dialogue.
The summit, organised by the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat in partnership with UNICEF, ActionAid, GIZ, and other development partners, convened over 200 participants to develop youth-focused strategies for Nigeria’s NDC 3.0 climate agenda.
Katsina recorded one of the highest youth representations at the summit, with the delegation led by Hon. Suleiman Ribadu, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Climate Change, alongside Dr. Yusha’u El-Sunais Sani.
“EcoTrack integrates monitoring systems with reward-based participation to encourage students to take climate action seriously,” Ribadu said.
He explained that the initiative motivates students through incentives such as scholarships, learning materials, and academic support for outstanding participants across participating schools.
“It is designed to build active engagement while promoting a culture of environmental responsibility in schools,” he added.
Beyond education, EcoTrack also offers environmental and economic potential by generating reliable data on carbon sequestration and impact tracking, positioning Katsina for future participation in carbon market opportunities.
The delegation received commendation for its presentation, further strengthening Katsina’s growing profile in climate innovation and sustainability.
The achievement reflects the commitment of Governor Radda, to environmental sustainability and youth inclusion in climate action.
Participating youths expressed appreciation to the Katsina State Government for its support, as well as to Dr. Mustapha Shehu, Executive Secretary of KTDMB, whose sponsorship enabled several delegates to attend the summit.
