    NIGERIAN ARMY INTELLIGENCE SCHOOL CONDUCTS AWARENESS LECTURES ON IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICES

    The Nigerian Army Intelligence School (NAIS), Tego Barracks, Apapa, Lagos, has conducted a 2-day awareness lectures on Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) for students of Second Quarter Courses of the institution from 15 – 16 June, 2026.

    A statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim Shittu, acting deputy director army public relations headquarters Nigerian army signals said the lecture was aimed at enhancing the students’ understanding of contemporary IED threats and strengthening their capacity to effectively support intelligence and Counter-IED operations in diverse security environments.

    The lecture was delivered by a team from the Nigerian Army Engineers led by Major Jamilu Usman. During the session, the team leader provided an in-depth overview of the evolution of IED threats, identification of IED components, methods of initiation, various modes of IED delivery, and indicators associated with IED activities. He also highlighted the impact of IEDs on military operations and national security, Counter-IED drills, safety procedures, as well as post-blast investigation techniques.

    Major Usman further examined the IED cycle, emphasizing the networks, logistics, planning, and operational processes involved in the employment of IEDs. He also discussed strategies for disrupting IED networks and mitigating the threats posed by such devices to military personnel and civilian populations.

    Additionally, the resource person elaborated on the appropriate actions to be taken upon sighting suspected IEDs and outlined critical post-blast investigation procedures, which include scene safety management, evidence preservation, forensic analysis, intelligence gathering, and reconstruction of IED incidents for operational and investigative purposes.

    As part of the training package, outdoor practical sessions were conducted to reinforce the theoretical knowledge acquired during the lectures, where students actively participated in the interactive exercises, asked pertinent questions, and shared operational experiences, thereby enriching the overall learning process.

    The awareness lectures underscore the Nigerian Army’s commitment to building the capacity of its personnel through continuous professional military education and training, while enhancing preparedness to effectively address emerging security threats across the country.
