The Kaduna State Government has taken another major step to improve healthcare delivery as the Executive Secretary, Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board, Prof. Yusuf Jamoh, led a delegation on an inspection visit to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika, Zaria.
A statement signed by Haruna Ibrahim head information and public relations of the hospital said the visit was carried out on the directives of the Kaduna State Governor, His Excellency Senator Uba Sani with focus on the Male and Female medical wards ahead of a planned rehabilitation and renovation programme.
Speaking during the inspection visit, Prof. Yusuf Jamoh, said the initiative is part of the state government’s plan to reform the healthcare sector. The goal is to strengthen healthcare delivery from Primary Health Centres to tertiary hospitals that receive referrals. The intervention at ABUTH is aimed at further strengthening the system by providing improved facilities for patients requiring specialist care.
“The programme is designed to complete the healthcare delivery chain by linking primary, secondary and tertiary institutions like ABUTH. This will also strengthen research, training of health workers and the provision of specialized medical services,” he said.
Prof. Jamoh added that renovation works will commence immediately. officials have been directed to begin preparation of the Bill of Quantities and other project documents to ensure quick take-off.
In his remarks the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ahmed Hamidu Umdagas, described the initiative as a major development for ABUTH and for healthcare in Kaduna State.
He expressed appreciation to the state government for the intervention, noting that the renovation plan will transform the situation and further strengthen the relationship between ABUTH and the Kaduna State Government.
Prof. Umdagas commended the Kaduna State Governor for demonstrating commitment to improving healthcare and for recognizing the need for standard facilities at all levels.
He stressed that “quality healthcare does not end with functional primary and secondary facilities. It also requires tertiary hospitals equipped with modern facilities to provide specialized services and serve as referral centres.”
The delegation also conducted a spot assessment of the Male and Female Medical wards and visited the Drug Quality-Control Laboratory.
Prof. Jamoh expressed satisfaction with the laboratory’s equipment and personnel, noting its capacity to test drug samples for active ingredients and to detect contamination with harmful microorganisms.
He said the laboratory presents an important area for collaboration between Kaduna State Government and ABUTH, especially in the fight against counterfeit and substandard medicines.
The visit was attended by the Director of Administration, Barr. Buhari Zailani and the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) Prof. Mohammed Ibrahim Zaria, along with other senior officials of the hospital.
The visit is expected to further strengthen cooperation between Kaduna State Government and ABUTH in improving healthcare infrastructure and health outcomes forthe people of the state.
