As part of activities marking the commomeration of its 50th Anniversary, the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria [MWAN], Kaduna State Chapter, carried out a tree planting exercise at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria.
A statement signed by head of information and public relations unit of the hospital,Haruna Ibrahim said the team, led by, Prof. Hafsat Sulaiman Maiwada, was received by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee [CMAC], Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim Zaria, on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ahmed Umdagas Hamidu.
Speaking during the exercise, Prof. Maiwada said the tree planting initiative was part of MWAN’s contribution to combating climate change, promoting environmental health, and creating a greener and healthier hospital environment for patients and staff. She noted that the 50th anniversary is not only a celebration of five decades of service by women in Medicine, but also a renewed commitment to sustainable health and community development.
She disclosed that the association has been planting trees across Kaduna State and in some schools around Zaria, and explained that MWAN chose ABUTH as one of the institutions for the exercise because of its strategic role in healthcare delivery in Northern Nigeria and its vast landmass that requires greening.
In his response, the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim Zaria, thanked the association for the thoughtful gesture and for choosing ABUTH as part of its anniversary celebration. He described the initiative as timely, especially at a time when climate change, air pollution, flooding and erosion pose serious threats to public health.
Prof. Zaria added that the tree planting aligns with the United Nations objectives for combating climate change and the Federal Government’s green initiative.
He assured the association that Ma
nagement will ensure proper nurturing and maintenance of the trees to maturity.
Highlights of the event were the symbolic planting of trees by the MWAN Chairperson and the CMACj MWAN, and staff of ABUTH.
