Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has been ranked 4th among Nigerian universities and 42nd in Africa in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, recording an overall score of 5,552.5 points.
A statement from the Public Affairs Directorate Office of the VC said in the global ranking, ABU placed 1,032nd out of 2,016 participating universities from 110 countries, highlighting the University’s participation in the global sustainability and green campus agenda.
The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, initiated by Universitas Indonesia, assesses universities based on their commitments, initiatives and achievements in sustainable campus development and environmental responsibility.
ABU’s 2026 performance was measured across seven key sustainability indicators:
– Setting and Infrastructure (SI): 685 points
– Energy and Climate Change (EC): 1,300 points
– Waste (WS): 550 points
– Water (WR): 905 points
– Transportation (TR): 800 points
– Education (ED): 700 points
– Governance and Digitalization (GD): 612.5 points
The result reflects the University’s engagement with critical areas of sustainable development, including energy and climate change, water management, transportation, waste management, infrastructure, education, governance and digitalization.
The ranking also provides ABU with a valuable benchmark for assessing its sustainability initiatives and identifying areas for further strengthening. The University’s continued participation in the global ranking reinforces its engagement with environmental sustainability and responsible campus development.
Moving forward, sustained institutional commitment, improved documentation and data management, and targeted interventions across the seven assessment areas will be important in further strengthening ABU’s performance in subsequent editions of the ranking.
