A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Ahmadu Bello University and The Gambia’s University of Education (UEG) to facilitate distance learning semester examinations, e-tutoring, staff exchange, and academic mobility.
A statement from the public affairs directorate office of the VC said the MoU was signed at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria on Thursday, 25th June, 2026.
The Gamban university agreed to host the Liaison Office of ABU Distance Learning Centre (DLC) in The Gambia as well as market its programmes and courses.
According to the MoU, the University of Education shall also allow the ABU Distance Learning Centre to use its facilities to conduct and/or manage semester examinations for registered students of the centre in The Gambia.
UEG further agreed to allow ABU to conduct online teaching of some of the courses offered by UEG.
The Gambian university shall in addition make available and permit the Distance Learning Centre to use its premises and facilities to conduct and/or manage its semester examinations under the terms and conditions contained in the agreement.
On its own side, ABU Distance Learning Centre agreed for suitably qualified staff of the UEG to be engaged as e-tutors for its various programmes and courses.
Regarding the staff exchange and academic mobility, both parties shall facilitate staff exchange and joint research initiatives.
This is in addition to co-supervision of postgraduate students, guest lectureships, and collaborative academic workshops to promote institutional parity and mutual capacity enhancement.
The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Ahmadu Ahmed, signed for ABU while his UEG counterpart, Prof Adamu Ahmed, stood in for the Gambian university. Coincidentally, both vice-chancellors bear the same name (Adamu Ahmed).
Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, the ABU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, emphasised that the deal was for staff exchange, students exchange, and collaborative research.
He explained that it would entail engagement in online and blended learning through ABU’s virtual learning centre platforms.
According to him, the Sustainable Procurement and Environmental Social Standards Centre of Excellence (SPESSECE) would equally be used, as it offers a large number of courses for undergraduate, postgraduate, and advanced diploma.
He expressed confidence that the collaboration would further enhance the capacity of the Gambian university in the effective delivery of academic programmes and courses.
The MOU, according to him, would also expand the footprints of both institutions and expose them as purely African.
Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Education, The Gambia, Prof Adamu Ahmed, was delighted over the development and stressed that the collaboration would enhance the academic standing of his university.
The Mou signing was attended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration,Prof Bello Sabo; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof Raymond B Bako; and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Advancement, Research and Innovation, Prof Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi.
Others present were the Registrar, Rabiu Samaila; the Ag. University Librarian, Dr Abdullahi Abubakar Mohammed; the Director, Distance Learning Centre, Prof M. B. Mu’azu; the Centre Leader, SPESSECE, Prof. Wisdom Japhet; and the Director, Counselling and Human Development Centre, Prof Hadiza Tukur.
They also included the Chairperson, Committee of Deans and Directors, Prof Maryam Aminu; the Director, Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring, Prof Bello Mukhtar; and the Executive Director, Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Prof. Ado A. Yusuf.
Others were the Executive Director, NAERLS, Prof Yusuf Sani Ahmad; the Dean of Social Sciences, Prof Shamsuddeen Mohammed; and the Deputy Director, NAPRI, Dr Muhammad Sa’id Tanko, who represented the executive Director, Prof M R Hassan.
