Ahmadu Bello University and the University of Glasgow (UoG), Scotland, UK have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop research cooperation and to promote mutual understanding.
A statement from the public affairs directorate of the University said both parties signed the agreement at the 575 year old UK university on Wednesday, 29th April, 2026.
It said specifically, the MoU was signed for exchange of research staff, exchange of students, conducting collaborative research projects, and joint grant sourcing/application.
It is also for conducting lectures and organising symposia, exchange of research information and materials, as well as promoting other research cooperation as mutually agreed.
In the agreement, ABU acted through its Africa Centre of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology (ACENTDFB) while UoG acted through its College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, signed the academic deal for Ahmadu Bello University while the Vice Principal (External Relations) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement), Prof Rachel Sandison, OBE, signed on behalf of the Court of University of Glasgow.
Prof Andy Waters, College International Dean, Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow and Prof Yakubu Ibrahim, Centre Leader, ACENTDFB, Ahmadu Bello University, signed as witnesses.
The MoU, which is valid for a period of five years from the date of signing, may only be amended or modified by a written agreement signed by the representatives of each party.
According to the document, nothing in the MoU should be construed as legally binding.
Each party agreed to carry out the collaborative activities in accordance with the laws and regulations of the respective countries after full consultation and approval.
The prospect of expanding the scope of the Memorandum of Understanding is highly anticipated given the series of presentations made and the discussions held before the MoU signing.
Prof Harry De-Koning, a professor of parasite biochemistry and pharmacology, University of Glasgow, has been most instrumental in facilitating the MoU.
The Executive Secretary, Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Prof Shuaibu Aliyu Shehu, was on the delegation to the University of Glasgow for the MoU signing.
Prof Shehu pledged to leverage the MoU to build strong relationship between the PTDF and the University of Glasgow.
The Chairman and Founder of AMA-MED Manufacturing Ltd, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa Bello, was also present at the MoU signing. Bello, who was delighted to be part of the delegation, expressed interest in working along for the desired impact.
The Director, Directorate of Advancement and International Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof M I Umar-Buratai and Prof Emmanuel Balogun of ACENTDFB were part of the delegation.
