The Federal Government says ongoing work on the 375-kilometre Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway will improve connectivity, ease the movement of goods and passengers, and boost economic activities across Northern Nigeria.

The Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, stated this at the flag-off ceremony in Tamburawa, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.

Umahi said the administration of President Bola Tinubu had completed nearly 400 kilometres of inherited and new roads in the North-West within three years, while more than 149 emergency road projects had also been completed in the zone.

He said 81 kilometres of reinforced concrete pavement between Abuja and Jere in Kaduna State had been completed, while work on Section Two, covering 164 kilometres, had reached 148 kilometres, leaving less than 20 kilometres to complete.

The minister said the President had directed the installation of solar streetlights along the entire 375-kilometre highway to improve visibility and road safety, particularly at night.

Umahi listed other projects in the region to include the 350-kilometre Sokoto-Zamfara-Zaria road, the 132-kilometre Kano-Kongolam road, the 159-kilometre Zaria-Hunkuyi road and the 1,068-kilometre Sokoto-Badagry highway.

He added that the Federal Government was also executing the Kano Northern Bypass and internal road projects, which are expected to improve movement within the state and strengthen links with neighbouring communities.

The minister urged Nigerians to support the government’s economic reforms, saying they were beginning to yield benefits.

In his remarks, Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State commended the Federal Government for its commitment to the highway project, noting that improved road infrastructure was vital to the movement of people and goods.

He appealed to the federal government to intensify efforts in reconstruction and rehabilitation of all federal roads in Kano with a view to enhancing effective service delivery.

Highlights of the event included speeches from chairmen of Works committees in the Senate and House of Representatives and other stakeholders.
