The Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria [ABUTH] today joined the rest of the world to commemorate World Pharmacists Day 2026 with the theme: “Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures.”
Speaking at the event, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ahmed Umdagas Hamidu, who was represented by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim Zaria, lauded pharmacists as indispensable pillars of patient care.
A statement signed by Haruna Ibrahim head information and public relations officer of the hospital said he described them as experts at the intersection of medicine supply, scientific innovation and patient care delivery, ensuring safe, effective and rational use of medicines.
He stated that Management is committed to empowering pharmacists by equipping them with competencies and a supportive working environment to meet evolving health needs. He urged them to reciprocate Management’s gesture through dedication to duty and called on the Head of Department to carry all staff along to maintain peace and industrial harmony.
In his remarks, the Director of Administration, Barr. Buhari Zailani, underscored the critical role of pharmacists in disease prevention, access to care, health system resilience and sustainability.
He disclosed that all candidates presented by the Pharmacy Department for the 2026 promotion exercise were successful, describing it as a result of Management’s commitment to staff welfare and career progression
Barr. Zailani, however, expressed concern over the prevalence of indiscipline in some sections of the Department, noting that Management is aware that some officers at the directorate level do not report to duty regularly. He stated that such attitudes are counterproductive to the goals and aspirations of the Hospital and warned that Management will not spare any staff found wanting in the discharge of their duties.
In his remarks, the Head of Pharmacy Department, Pharm. Bilkisu Umar, who was ably represented by Pharm. T. T. Shekarau, said World Pharmacists Day, observed every 25th September, is a day to celebrate and make visible the contributions of pharmacists to better health outcomes and patient safety.
The event featured a career talk, online webinar, Radio session, Orphanage visitation, outreach and free counselling on safe medication use, and a lecture on the expanding roles of hospital pharmacists in antimicrobial stewardship and patient safety.
The event was attended by members of the Top Management Committee, pharmacists and other members of staff.
