The Academic Staff Union Universities,A SUU Yola zone has urged the federal and state governments in the zone and country at large to implement the 2025 reached agreement signed by both parties in the interest of peace and tranquility.
Zonal Coordinator of the Union, Comrade Dani Mamman announced the position at a press conference titled “Protect our Universities, respect our Agreement”held in Yola on Tuesday decrying that the non compliance postures of the governments have distorted the agreement eight years after.
Comrade Mamman regrettably said eight years of negotiation, promises of fair wages,commitments to research and innovation are being ignored,distorted, or abandoned noting that the Federal and State governments’ selective implementation of the 2025 Agreement, the refusal of some State university visitors to pay the new agreed salary and the persistent interference in the workings of our Universities are undermining academic freedom, equity, and national development.
“Gentle men of the press, it may interest you to note that all the state universities in Yola Zone (ADSU, BOSU, TSU, YSU), are yet to implement the 2025 agreement.
“We call on these visitors to immediately implement the agreement to guarantee industrial harmony. Today, we speak not just for academics, but for every Nigerian who values education, fairness, and the future of this country”. The Union highlighted.
According to the Union, the December 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement, signed after eight(8) years of negotiations, is under threat due to the government’s failure to:Inaugurate the Implementation
Monitoring Committee (IMC), the body mandated to prevent bureaucratic bottlenecks and ensure full execution of the Agreement. Momentum generated by the Agreement is rapidly waning.
The Zonal Coordinator said that, the Partial and selective implementation of salary components including Consolidated Academic Tool Allowances (CATA), Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and Professorial Allowances (PA), is widespread. Disturbingly, all state governors, as Visitors to state universities in our zone have refused to implement the new CATA salary, undermining the Agreement, and causing inequity among staff.
He also alleged that, some Universities’ administrators pick and choose which allowances to pay, further destabilizing the system protesting this selective implementation and demanding for an immediate and full compliance from the federal and state governments to safeguard the hard-won gains of Nigerian academics.
“Moreover, ASUU rejects the unilateral establishment of the National Research and Innovation Development Fund without its lauren participation. The 2025 Agreement clearly mandates research funding of at least 1% of GDP, yet the government’s proposal,denominated in dollars and developed without stakeholders consultation, is a distortion of agreed objectives.
While condemning alleged political undue interference in the education sector, ASUU called on stakeholders, the parents, students, and patriotic Nigerians to intervene by advising the government to do the needful as it remains open to genuine negotiations on implementation of the agreement
It could be recalled that the President of ASUU, Professor Christopher Piwuna made similar appeal during a press conference after the Union’s National Executive Council, NEC meeting held in Modibbo Adama University Yola on Monday 11th May 2026 pointing out that many of the issues were unresolved and still remains unresolved to date.
