In line with activities heralding the 2026 Independence Day Anniversary Celebration, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on 29 September 2026, commissioned 50 housing units built for widows of fallen heroes at the Post-Service Housing Development Limited (PHDL) Pacesetter Estate 4, Akobo, Ibadan, Oyo State.
A statement signed by Lieutenant Augustina Nkeonye Acting Public Relations Officer Post-Service Housing Development Limited said the project is a joint initiative of the Nigerian Army (NA), through PHDL, and Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL).

The COAS, who was represented by the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, NA, Major General Auwalu Mahmuda, said the provision of the homes demonstrated the NA’s commitment to the welfare of families of personnel who lost their lives in service to the nation and humanity. The COAS commended PHDL and FHFL for the initiative and reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to supporting families of the fallen heroes.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of PHDL, Major General Kevin Ukandu, described the project as an opportunity to honour the memory and sacrifices of personnel who paid the ultimate price in the service and defence of the nation. He said the 50 homes were the product of the partnership between PHDL and FHFL and expressed appreciation to FHFL for its commitment to bringing the project to fruition, adding that the partnership could provide a foundation for similar interventions in other locations.

Similarly, the MD/CEO of FHFL, Mr Abdul Mutallab Mukhtar, who was represented by the Executive Director, Operations, Dr Emeka Henry Inegbu, said the homes should not be viewed as charity for the beneficiaries, but as a responsibility owed to families whose husbands and fathers made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. He further added that the project was intended to honour their sacrifices by providing the widows they left behind with secure and dignified homes. He added that the energy-efficient houses would be complemented with skills acquisition training to equip the beneficiaries with the means to pursue sustainable livelihoods.
The ceremony was attended by senior military officers, traditional rulers, representatives of security agencies, FHFL officials and other critical stakeholders, as well as families of the fallen heroes. The event featured the formal commissioning of the housing units and the presentation of keys to the beneficiaries.
