The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, represented by the Director General, Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, Major General Tariweriye Gagariga, on Sunday, 27 September 2026, joined senior government officials, military leaders and other dignitaries at an interdenominational church service held at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, as part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The service was attended by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who represented the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd); the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, GCOR; Service Chiefs, senior government officials and other distinguished guests.
The interdenominational service provided an opportunity for prayers for the peace, unity, security and continued progress of Nigeria, as well as for the nation’s leadership and the Armed Forces. It also underscored the collective responsibility of Nigerians to promote national cohesion, peaceful coexistence and sustainable development.
The occasion also featured activities commemorating the 66th birthday of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu ,CON.
