The Commander, Army Headquarters (AHQ) Garrison, Major General John Lar, has on Thursday, 23 July 2026, reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening collaboration between the AHQ Garrison and the Armed Forces of Nigeria Radio Service (AFNRS), describing strategic communication as an indispensable component of contemporary military operations.

A statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Bashir Muhammad Jajira Acting Deputy Director Army Headquarters Garrison Public Relations Said he made this known during a familiarization visit to the headquarters of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Radio Service (AFNRS) at Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro, Abuja, noting that the visit formed part of his familiarization tour of formations, units and establishments within his area of responsibility since assuming command.

Maj Gen Lar further stated that adversaries now exploit digital media platforms to spread propaganda, misinformation and fear among the populace. He stressed that this reality reinforces the need for the Armed Forces of Nigeria to proactively communicate its operations, achievements and sacrifices through credible and professional media platforms. He reiterated that military-owned media organisations such as AFNRS remain vital in projecting accurate information, countering false narratives and reinforcing public confidence and trust in the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The commander further assured the management of AFNRS of the AHQ Garrison’s continued support and pledged to provide every necessary assistance within its capacity to enhance the station’s effectiveness in fulfilling its strategic communication mandate.

Earlier, the Executive Director of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Radio Service, Colonel Timothy Antigha (Rtd), welcomed the Commander AHQ Garrison and his delegation, describing the visit as a demonstration of the importance attached to inter-organisational cooperation within the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Colonel Antigha explained that AFNRS was established in 2015 in response to the evolving nature of conflict and the growing influence of non-state actors, noting that strategic communication has become a vital tool in shaping public perception and advancing national security objectives.

He disclosed that the station currently broadcasts on 107.7 FM across several states, including Kaduna, the Federal Capital Territory, Niger and Nasarawa States. According to him, AFNRS has significantly contributed to enhancing public understanding of Defence Headquarters activities and strengthening civil-military relations.

The Executive Director further noted that AFNRS operates under a community radio licence issued by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), which does not permit commercial advertising. He therefore commended Defence Headquarters for its sustained institutional support to the station.

Highlights of the event included signing of the visitors’ book, presentation of souvenirs and group photographs.
