*Prof. Bunkure Extols Speaker Abbas for University Expansion

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Education (FUE), Zaria, Prof. Yahaya Bunkure, has said the institution is making steady progress towards sustainable growth.

A statement signed by the media aide to the VC Sani Lawal maqarphy said Bunkure stated this, while receiving a team from Newsworth Magazine led by Mr. Fanen Ihyongo during a courtesy visit.

He said since assuming office in September 2025, the university has recorded significant achievements in infrastructure, policy reforms and staff welfare.

“The welfare of both students and staff remains central to this administration. We are pursuing aggressive reforms in infrastructure, discipline and governance to reposition the university,” he said.

The vice-chancellor also disclosed that the university will soon inaugurate its Senate, following the promotion of 43 Chief Lecturers to professors, and 15 associate professors.

According to him, the development signals the institution’s growing maturity and readiness to operate a full-fledged Senate, as well as the transition of academic and non-academic staff in consonance with the University’s Scheme of Service.

He further said the management had introduced programmes to support staff development, including sponsorship to conferences and workshops, with about 150 staff expected to benefit this year.

Prof. Bunkure added that the university is encouraging academic staff to obtain PhDs to enhance global competitiveness, and making efforts to transform the institution into an ICT-driven university.

The VC, however, identified land constraints as a major challenge to the university’s expansion, noting that the institution is getting filled up with more structures in the pipeline. He commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, for his supporting efforts and the will to provide space to address the issue.

Earlier, Ihyongo said the visit was to congratulate the vice-chancellor and explore areas of collaboration in promoting the university’s activities and academic output.

Prof. Bunkure appreciated the team for the visit.
