    Gov. Buni Mourns Damagum Tragedy, Pledges Stronger Highway Measures

    Executive Governor of Yobe State, Hon. (Dr) Mai Mala Buni, CON has extended heartfelt condolences to the Emir of Fune, Saleh Idriss Ibn Usman, and the people of Damagum following a devastating motor accident that claimed several lives.

    Represented by his deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, the governor paid a condolence visit on Monday, May 4, 2026, describing the incident as deeply tragic and a painful loss not only to the affected families but to the entire state.

    A statement signed by Yusuf Ali focal person digital and strategic communication said the fatal accident occurred when an 18-seater commercial bus veered off course and rammed into worshippers observing Juma’at prayers, leaving multiple casualties and several others injured.

    Governor Buni, through his deputy, expressed profound sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed souls, while also wishing the injured a speedy recovery. He disclosed that the state government had already taken immediate steps by directing free medical treatment for all victims and approving financial assistance for the injured as well as families of the deceased.

    The deputy governor commended the swift intervention of emergency responders and security agencies, emphasizing the need for sustained vigilance and proactive measures to avert future occurrences. He further revealed that the government is considering the introduction of strategic safety mechanisms along highways passing through Damagum to significantly reduce risks to lives.

    He also urged community leaders, stakeholders, and Islamic scholars to intensify awareness campaigns, particularly among youths, against taking laws into their own hands, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and order in times of distress.

    In his remarks, the member representing Damagum Constituency, Maina Digma Gana, described the incident as unfortunate and called on residents to avoid conducting prayers on highways to prevent avoidable tragedies.

    Responding, the Emir of Fune, His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr) Saleh Idriss Ibn Usman, expressed appreciation to the state government for its prompt response and the high-powered delegation sent to commiserate with the emirate. He also appealed for lasting solutions to ensure such tragic incidents do not recur.

    The deputy governor was accompanied by the Acting Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Muhammad Mohammed Goje; Commissioner for Health, Muhammad Lawan Gana; alongside other top government officials, security chiefs, and aides.
