_Tamburawa, Challawa, and Goron Dutse facilities to be fully rehabilitated; state commits to restoring water supply to millions of residents
In a decisive move to address the prolonged water scarcity affecting residents of Kano State, the state Ministry of Water Resources announces that His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the sum of ₦21.29 billion for the rehabilitation and restoration of critical water supply infrastructure across the state.
The approval, disclosed by the Acting Commissioner, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, targets key facilities whose declining performance has significantly reduced water availability in Kano.
According to the statement the projects include:
– Rehabilitation of Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and restoration of the Raw Water Pump Station for ₦9.9 billion.
– Rehabilitation of the Challawa Raw Water Pump Station and Water Treatment Plant, alongside the restoration of the Goron Dutse Reservoirs for ₦11.39 billion.
Dr. Hashim described the intervention as one of the most substantial investments in the water sector in recent years, emphasizing that it is both urgent and necessary.
He provided a frank assessment of the current situation. The Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, designed to produce 150 million litres per day, is currently operating at only about 27 percent capacity due to damage caused by flooding, particularly to its raw water pump station from 2022. Similarly, the Challawa facility, with a capacity of 220 million litres per day, is functioning at less than 30 percent.
Combined, both plants were built to supply 370 million litres daily but are now delivering far below that threshold, contributing directly to the widespread shortages being experienced across the state.
In addition, the Goron Dutse Reservoirs, which serve as a major distribution hub for large parts of Kano metropolis, have been rendered non-functional following the vandalization of critical components.
“These realities explain the scale of the problem we face,” Dr. Hashim stated. “However, they also define the focus of our intervention as this administration confronts the crisis directly.”
He assured residents that the approved projects will restore production capacity, improve distribution efficiency, and stabilize water supply across Kano.
While acknowledging the frustration and hardship this situation has caused people in Kano state, Dr Hashim assures that “His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is committed to resolve these challenges in a sustainable manner and we are confident that, with these measures, water scarcity in Kano will soon be significantly reduced and ultimately eliminated.”
The Commissioner also stressed the need for public cooperation, particularly in safeguarding water infrastructure from vandalism, which has contributed to repeated service disruptions.
The Kano State Government reaffirmed its commitment to delivering reliable water supply and improving the quality of life for all residents through sustained investment in critical infrastructure.
