Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has revived the Goron Dutse water facility after about three decades of non-operation, paving the way for the supply of an additional 40 million litres of potable water to residents of Kano metropolis.
A statement signed by Sunusi Bature Dawakin TofaDirector-General Media and Publicity Government House, Kano said Governor Yusuf announced this on Monday when he led a high-powered government delegation on an inspection tour of the Goron Dutse water facility, where he assessed the three reservoirs and pumping infrastructure being restored for the distribution of treated water across the metropolis.
The Governor said the restoration of the Goron Dutse facility was part of his administration’s comprehensive intervention in the state’s water infrastructure, following inspections of dams, treatment plants, pumping stations and other facilities to identify critical gaps and restore them to functional capacity.
He disclosed that the assessment of the state’s water infrastructure culminated in the award of an ₦11 billion contract for major works aimed at strengthening water production, treatment and distribution across Kano State.
According to the Governor, following the completion of works at the Challawa Water Works, the 15.6-kilometre pipeline connecting Challawa to the Goron Dutse reservoirs has been tested and confirmed to be in good condition.
He explained that the water supply process would involve conveying treated water from the Challawa Water Works through the 15.6-kilometre pipeline to the three reservoirs at Goron Dutse, where it would be stored before being pumped through the distribution network to communities across Kano metropolis.
Governor Yusuf expressed satisfaction with the restoration of the Goron Dutse pumping facility, which had remained out of operation for about 30 years, describing its return to service as an important milestone in his administration’s efforts to improve access to potable water in the state.
He said the three reservoirs, with a combined storage capacity of approximately 40 million litres, would provide a major additional storage point for treated water and support its onward distribution to residents across Kano metropolis.
The Governor appreciated the people of Kano State for their continued support and understanding, assuring them that his administration would continue to complete the necessary infrastructure and technical works required to improve the availability, reliability and distribution of potable water.
Speaking during the inspection, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, explained the rehabilitation and technical works carried out on the three Goron Dutse reservoirs and the associated pumping infrastructure.
He said the remaining preparations were at an advanced stage, adding that upon completion, the ministry would seek the Governor’s approval to commence the pumping of potable water from the Goron Dutse facility into Kano metropolis.
