The Zamfara State Government has approved an upward review of pensions for retirees in the state and local government service as part of efforts to improve their welfare.
The State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mahmud Muhammad Dantawasa made this known in a statement, saying the approval followed recommendations submitted to Governor Dauda Lawal after a comprehensive review by a special committee and the Office of the Accountant General.
He said the committee was set up to examine the condition of pensioners, especially those in the lower income category, whose earnings have become inadequate in view of current economic realities.
According to the commissioner, the review was in line with the Federal Government circular on consequential adjustment arising from the implementation of the National Minimum Wage (Amended) Act, 2024, which recommended a baseline increase of thirty-two thousand naira monthly for pensioners.
He added that, after detailed deliberations and assessment of available resources, the state government has approved hundred percent implementation of the adjustment for both state and local government pensioners.
Dantawasa said thousands of pensioners are expected to benefit from the increase, aimed at cushioning the effects of rising living costs and improving their welfare.
Governor Dauda Lawal reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of workers and pensioners, noting that policies and programmes that promote social protection, economic stability and improved living conditions will continue to receive attention.
The government has directed relevant agencies to ensure seamless implementation of the approved adjustment and timely payment to beneficiaries.
