The Kano State Ministry of Water Resources has formally signed contracts for the rehabilitation and restoration of critical water supply infrastructure at the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants, in line with the Kano State Government’s commitment to improving access to safe and reliable water supply across the state.

It will be recalled that during the State Executive Council Meeting held in April 2026, His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, approved the sum of ₦21.29 billion for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the key water facilities aimed at revitalizing the state’s water distribution network and addressing longstanding infrastructure challenges.

A statement signed by the acting commissioner ministry of water resources,Dr Dahiru Mohammad Hashim said the approved projects include:

    – The rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and restoration of the Raw Water Pump Station at the cost of ₦9.9 billion, awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited.

    – The rehabilitation of the Challawa Raw Water Pump Station and Water Treatment Plant, alongside the restoration of the Goron Dutse Reservoirs, at the cost of ₦11.39 billion, awarded to CCECC Nigeria Limited.

The contract signing ceremony was held on Wednesday, May 7, 2026, at the headquarters of the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, where the Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, signed the agreements alongside representatives of the contracting firms, CGC and CCECC.

Speaking during the ceremony, Dr. Hashim expressed confidence in the technical competence and capacity of the companies to execute the projects in accordance with the required standards and specifications. He stressed the importance of timely delivery and urged the contractors to ensure the completion of all project activities within the agreed eight-month timeframe.

The Acting Commissioner stated that the rehabilitation of the two strategic water treatment plants represents a historic and major step in the administration’s broader efforts to revive critical public infrastructure, strengthen water production and distribution systems, and improve access to potable water for millions of residents across Kano State.

According to him, the projects are expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and sustainability of water supply services, particularly in metropolitan Kano and surrounding communities that depend heavily on the affected facilities.

Representatives of CGC and CCECC formally received their award letters during the event and assured the Ministry of their readiness and commitment to delivering the projects within, and possibly ahead of, the stipulated timeline while maintaining high quality standards.

The Ministry of Water Resources reaffirmed its commitment to strict supervision and monitoring of the projects to ensure transparency, accountability, and successful execution for the overall benefit of the people of Kano State.
