The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adebayo Babalola, has charged officers and soldiers within the 81 Division Area of Responsibility (AOR) to maintain a high level of discipline and professionalism while using social media platforms.
The GOC, represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff Administration, Colonel II Gobir, gave the charge on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, during the opening ceremony of the Second Quarter Social Media Awareness Lecture for personnel within the 81 Division AOR. The event was held at Nebo Hall, Abalti Barracks, Ojuelegba, Lagos.
The GOC stated that the use of social media within the Armed Forces of Nigeria must be treated as a security-sensitive activity that requires discipline, situational awareness, and proper cyber hygiene.
Delivering a lecture titled “Impact of Social Media Security on Military Operations and Policy on the Use of Social Media for the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” Major MS Abah of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command noted that adversaries now exploit social media platforms to spread propaganda, coordinate logistics, recruit members, and raise funds.
A statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya Acting Deputy’ director army public relations,81 division Nigerian army said he explained that the seminar was aimed at acquainting personnel within the 81 Division AOR with the impact of social media on military operations, while also highlighting the importance of cyber hygiene.
Major Abah further noted that the lecture covered several areas, including the role and use of social media by the Nigerian Army, the exploitation of social media by terrorists and hostile groups, the Defence Headquarters policy on the use of social media by personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, as well as violations of social media regulations by personnel.
The lecture further discussed various methods employed by terrorist groups and other criminal elements on social media platforms.
Additionally, the seminar highlighted general guidelines for the use of social media by personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, including guidelines for the personal use of social media by officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army.
Similarly, forbidden practices relating to the use of social media were extensively discussed by the resource person. Also present to add his voice and discussed the paper was the Acting Chief Instructor Nigerian Army School of Public Relations and Information (NASPRI), Major T Wenke.
Participants for the two-day seminar were drawn from formations and units within the 81 Division Area of responsibility.
