The Adamawa state Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA has rehabilitated and reintegrate d over 111 drugs dependent persons comprising of 103 males and 8 females in its fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking from June 2025 to June 2026 in the state.
State Commander of the Agency, Aliyu Abubakar disclosed the development at the 2026 United Nations International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking ceremony held in Yola weekend stressing that, 69 males and 27 females were also counseled and rehabilitated through short term counseling and intervention basis and taken back into the society as healthy and productive individuals.
Aliyu emphasized that, this is a fundame ntal part of the Agency’s demand in reduction efforts and strategy. Treating addiction is a public health issue which needs to be tackled holistically.
“The State Command has, within the period under review, successfully rehabilitated and reintegrated over 111 drug dependent persons comprising 103 males and 8 females.
“Similarly, 69 males and 27 females were counseled and rehabilitated through short term counseling and intervention basis”.Abubakar maintained.
He added that, this year’s (2026) theme underscores the reality we face daily both in Adamawa State and across the nation. The “persisting issues” remain: the devastating impact of Cannabis and Opioids abuse on our youths, families, and communities.
The Commander announced that, the Agency has arrested 583 drugs suspects ,secured convictions of 270 with 196 cases receiving attention at the Federal high court Yola as well as seized over 5 toones of various illicit drugs substances worth millions of Naira.
According to him, the seized illicit drugs include:Psychotropic substances, which include Tramadol, Diazepam, Codeine, weighing 2,451.684 kg,Cannabis Sativa 2,925.089 kg and Methamphetamine commonly known as “Ice” 736 grams.
He noted that his command discovered and destroyed Cannabis Farms at Bakumjere Nassarawo Jereng in Mayo Belwa LGA of one and half (1.5) hectare, Mijulu Mubi North 1 hectare and Bogga Mubi South LGA, 1 hectare respectively.
“Criminals use proceeds of drugs to finance arms purchases and promote terrorism which fuels insecurity across our regions. By cutting off the drug supply and the billions in revenue it generates, we are directly weakening the economic base of criminal networks”.He reiterated.
Earlier in his keynote address, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri applauded the efforts of the NDLEA in fighting the activities of drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the assuring the unwavering support of his government with a view to reducing if not eradicating activities of drug abuse and trafficking in the state.
Various stakeholders while speaking in their separate good will messages pledged to contribute immensely in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking so that Adamawa state and Nigeria as a whole would be a drug free nation.
