Nigeria has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to regional peace, security and stability as troops of the Nigerian Contingent to the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (NIGCOY 11 ECOMIG) successfully graduated following a five-week pre-deployment training programme at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre (MLAILPKC), Jaji Military Cantonment, Kaduna State, on 19 June 2026.
Representing the Special Guest of Honour, the Chief of Operations (Army), Major General Mayirenso Lander Saraso, the Deputy Chief of Operations (Army), Force Generation, Major General Mohammed Danja, congratulated the graduating troops on the successful completion of their training.
A statement signed by Lieutenant Koni Elizabeth Kambai Ag assistant director army public relations, MLAILPKC said he charged them to uphold the highest standards of discipline, professionalism and integrity while representing Nigeria in the mission area. He further cautioned against Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), stressing the need for strict adherence to the United Nations’ zero tolerance policy and urging the troops to serve as worthy ambassadors of the nation.
In his remarks, the Commandant MLAILPKC, Major General Dangana Allu, stated that the training was conducted in accordance with United Nations standards and best practices for peace support operations. He noted that the curriculum covered key areas such as the ECOWAS mandate in The Gambia, human rights protection, rules of engagement, civil-military coordination and operational procedures.
The Commandant emphasized the importance of discipline, professionalism and strict compliance with the zero-tolerance policy on SEA throughout the deployment.
Major General Allu commended the instructors and facilitators for their dedication and professionalism in preparing the troops for the mission. He also expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, (NAM) for his unwavering support and strategic leadership, which continue to enhance the Nigerian Army’s capacity in peace support operations and other operational commitments.
Delivering the vote of thanks, the Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies, Brigadier General Gabriel Esho, expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Nigerian Army for its sustained support to the Centre. He congratulated the graduating personnel and encouraged them to uphold the values of excellence, discipline, and professionalism as they undertake their peacekeeping responsibilities in The Gambia.
Highlights of the ceremony included tactical demonstrations by the troops, presentation of awards and certificates to outstanding participants, presentation of contingent souvenirs, and group photographs.
