The Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Waidi Shaibu says Regimental Sergeant Majors remain critical to both administrative and operational effectiveness of the Army.

He stated this while declaring open a weeklong First Regimental Sergeant Majors Convention 2026 held at Ribadu Cantonment in Kaduna State.

Lt General Waidi Shaibu noted that the prevailing security situation required a highly disciplined, motivated and mission-ready force, stressing that Regimental Cadre personnel were central to this objective.

Represented by Major General Dangana Allu, the Army Chief charged the participants to uphold the virtues of professionalism, integrity and leadership worthy of emulation in their conduct.

“As custodians of discipline and regimentation, you serve as the bridge between command directives and their execution”

Also speaking, the Chief of Administration (Army), Major General Isa Abdullahi noted that Regimental Sergeant Majors occupy a strategic position, responsible for maintaining discipline, mentoring subordinates and ensuring effective implementation of policies down the line.

According to him, the convention was aimed at strengthening the professional and administrative framework of the Army.

“The effectiveness of any unit depends on the ability of Regimental Sergeant Majors to enforce standards, mentor troops and translate strategic directives into measurable action outcomes”

In his welcome address, General Officer Commanding One division, Major General Abubakar Sadiq Wase described the convention as a platform for knowledge exchange and leadership development.

He pointed out that the evolving security environment requires a blend of experience, innovation and strong leadership.

The convention featured discussions focusing on leadership, discipline, combat readiness, troops welfare and civil-military relations among others.

Participants were drawn from various units and formations across the country as well as sister security agencies.

The theme of the convention is: “Empowering Regimental Sergeant Majors To Drive Combat Readiness And Professional Excellence”
