In line with the approval of the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, the 17 Brigade, has been formally transferred from the 8 Division back to the premier 1 Division.
A statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Ajemasu Yake Jingina ,Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations1 Division Nigerian Army/Sector 1 Operation FANSAN YAMMA said the transition, which took place during a series of high-profile familiarisation visits on 1 and 2 October 2026, aligns with the strategic directives of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu NAM
The reorganization is part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing expansion from an 8 division to a 12 division structure. Excising the 17 Brigade from the 8 Division and restoring it to the 1 Division aims to optimize command architecture, boost operational fluidity, and sharpen the military’s response to evolving security threats across the North West.
Assessing new fronts and strengthening civil-military ties. On 1 October 2026, Major General Abubakar Saddique Muhammed Wase, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division and Commander of Sector 1 Joint Task Force (North West) Operation FANSAN YANMA, launched his tour by visiting the newly established 83 Battalion in Malumfashi.
The Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel KE Odi, briefed the GOC on the unit’s operational achievements, current activities, and tactical responsibilities within its Area of Responsibility. General Wase later inspected the construction progress at the battalion’s permanent site in Lambun Kyauta.
Recognizing the vital role of local communities play in counter-insurgency operations, Major General Wase paid a courtesy visit to the District Head of Malumfashi and Galadima Katsina, Justice Saddiq Abdullahi Mahuta (rtd), at his palace in Malumfashi. The meeting focused on strengthening civil-military cooperation and leveraging traditional oversight to bolster regional intelligence and security.

The transition culminated on 2 October 2026 at the Natsinta Cantonment in Katsina with the official handing and taking over ceremony. The symbolic event was co-led by Major General Wase and Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, GOC 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YANMA.
The ceremony opened with a historical briefing by the Commander of the 17 Brigade, Brigadier General Ishaya Ibrahim, who outlined the brigade’s rich legacy since its establishment in 2016 and subsequent operationalization on 22 February 2018. Following the briefing, both GOCs officially signed the Handing and Taking Over Notes to formally document the transfer of the brigade and its affiliated units.
To mark the new chapter, the commanders participated in a tree-planting ceremony at the Headquarters 17 Brigade Complex, symbolizing growth and continuity, followed by a solemn wreath laying ceremony to honour our fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.
The restructuring reached its peak at the Quarter Guard with a poignant flag lowering and hoisting ceremony. As the 8 Division and old 17 Brigade flags were lowered, the 1 Division flag alongside the new 17 Brigade flag rose to take their place. This ceremonial shift marked the formal conclusion of the brigade’s tenure under 8 Division and the official commencement of its command under 1 Division, all while preserving its distinct institutional heritage.
Following the flags’ hoisting, both GOCs jointly addressed the troops, urging them to maintain the highest standards of discipline and combat readiness.
Before concluding his engagements in the state, the GOC 1 Division paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Katsina, His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr) Abdulmumini Kabir Usman CFR, at his palace. General Wase expressed gratitude for the emirate’s enduring support of military operations and reiterated the Army’s commitment to restoring lasting peace and stability across Katsina State and the wider North West zone.
This strategic migration of the 17 Brigade signals a reinforced security posture in the region, ensuring that the premier 1 Division is fully equipped and positioned to fulfill the constitutional mandate of the Nigerian Army in securing a safer, more peaceful nation.
