The Nigerian Army Women Command (NAWC) has commenced its five-day Second Quarter Workshop 2026 at the Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration ( NASFA) APAPA, Lagos.
A statement signed by Major Nsima Essien assistant director army public relations women command Giri Abuja said the workshop brought together serving and retired senior military officers, stakeholders, and representatives of sister security agencies to deliberate on strengthening the operational effectiveness of female personnel in addressing contemporary security challenges.
It said the workshop, which began on Monday, 11 May 2026, is themed *“Repositioning the NAWC for Enhanced Efficiency in Curbing Contemporary Security Threats.”* It reflects the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to improve professionalism, operational readiness, and the strategic contributions of women within the Nigerian Army force structure.
Similarly, the event also aligns with the Command Philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General W Shaibu NAM on professional Excellence, Robust Administration, Operational Readiness, Strategic Communication and Exemplary Leadership across the Nigerian Army.
Representing the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division Nigerian Army Major General AA Babalola reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to strengthening operational readiness through training, mentorship, and strategic capacity building. Most importantly, he stressed the COAS drive for women inclusivity and equal opportunities to ensure efficient gender mainstreaming which is inline with Global best practice.
Additionally, the GOC highlighted the vital role women play in modern military operations, including peacekeeping missions, intelligence gathering, civil–military cooperation, and internal security operations. He noted that the workshop supports the Army Headquarters’ vision of building a highly professional and combat-effective force capable of addressing both conventional and asymmetric threats.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Commander NAWC, Brigadier General MS Adamu, expressed appreciation to the COAS for his continued support towards the development of Nigerian Army Female Personnel. He expressed with gratitude that for the first time in the history of Nigerian Army a complete Platoon were deployed in Foreign Peace Support Operations in the Federal Republic of Benin nicknamed OP ATILEYIN ALAFIA II.
The Commander explained that contemporary security threats require all of government and society approach, adaptive strategies, continuous training, and stronger collaboration among female military personnel and other security stakeholders to be overcome. According to him, the workshop was carefully designed to equip participants with modern operational knowledge, leadership skills, and strategic perspectives needed to operate effectively in complex security environments.
A keynote address was delivered by Lieutenant General LO Adeosun Rtd, who set the tune for the discuss on the changing dynamics of modern security threats and the need for institutional adaptation within military structures. He aptly gave an insight as why the Command was established simply to harness the potential of female personnel.
In another realm, as part of activities marking the workshop, a medical outreach programme was also organised at the venue to promote health awareness among soldiers and members of the surrounding community. Medical personnel provided consultations, health screenings, and medical advice, demonstrating the Nigerian Army’s commitment to humanitarian services and strong civil–military relations.
The workshop serves as a significant platform for strengthening the professional and operational capacity of female personnel in the Nigerian Army while reinforcing the Army’s commitment to inclusivity, professionalism, and national security.
