The Akwa Ibom State Police Command wishes to clarify the circumstances surrounding a motor accident which occurred on Wednesday, 9th September 2026, at the Police Checkpoint at Ikot Obio Odongo, along the Nung Udoe/Uyo Road in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
A statement signed by the command public relations officer DSP Timfon John said the clarification has become necessary following the circulation of a video on social media platforms, accompanied by claims suggesting that police officers lost their lives in the incident. The Command categorically states that the claim is false. No police officer lost his or her life, and no police personnel was injured in the incident.
Preliminary investigation revealed that at about 1340 hours on the said date, a Police Stop-and-Search operation was being conducted at Ikot Obio Odongo when a mini bus with registration number DUU 485 XA, driven by one Anietie, male, was stopped at the checkpoint.
While the mini bus was stationary at the checkpoint, a Lexus vehicle with registration number GWA 529 DS, which was allegedly coming from behind at speed, collided with the mini bus from the rear, causing significant damage to the mini bus.
Following the incident, both vehicles were taken to the Police Station for necessary investigation and documentation.
The Command wishes to emphasise that there was no loss of life and no injury to any police officer or other person as a result of the incident, contrary to the misleading narrative accompanying the viral video.
The Command therefore urges members of the public to disregard the false information and refrain from circulating unverified reports capable of causing unnecessary panic and apprehension among members of the public.
The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, reassures residents of the State that the Command remains committed to the protection of lives and property and will continue to carry out its statutory responsibilities, including lawful stop-and-search operations aimed at preventing crime and maintaining public safety.
