The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Education (FUE), Zaria, Prof. Yahaya Isa Bunkure, has called for sustained sensitisation and orientation programmes for staff members of the University and the general public on the safe use of roads.
A statement signed by the media aide to the VC, Sani Lawal maqarphy said Prof. Bunkure made the call when he received members of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Special Marshal, Zaria Command, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office on Tuesday.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that regular road safety awareness campaigns would help keep road users informed about current traffic regulations, road signs, vehicle safety requirements, and other measures necessary for preventing accidents and traffic violations.
He expressed appreciation to the FRSC Special Marshal for their commitment to promoting road safety and community service, assuring the team of the University’s readiness to collaborate with the Corps in activities that would benefit staff, students, and the wider community.
Prof. Bunkure commended the members of the Special Marshal for their sacrifices and voluntary service to humanity, stressing that community service remains an important responsibility of public servants with rewards both in this world and the hereafter.
The delegation was led by the Deputy Zonal Coordinator of the FRSC Special Marshal, Dr. S. M. Ahmed Omodara, an Associate Professor of Agricultural Science at the University, included Unit 2 Coordinator, SM Bolanle Adeniyi Oronsaye; Unit 3 Coordinator, SM Babatunde Areo; Unit 5 Coordinator, SM Mustapha Surajo, PhD; and other members of the Zonal Office.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Omodara said the purpose of the visit was to familiarise the Special Marshal leadership and activities with the Vice-Chancellor and further strengthen the cordial relationship that has existed between the University and the FRSC.
He noted that members of the FRSC Special Marshal Corps have consistently participated in various activities of the University over the years, further explaining that the activities of the Special Marshal are voluntary and aimed at giving back to society through road safety advocacy and public enlightenment.
Also speaking, SM Mustapha Surajo stated that the role of the FRSC extends beyond the enforcement of traffic regulations and making arrests, noting that officers often engage with motorists, particularly long-distance drivers, to encourage them to rest and refresh themselves during journeys in order to reduce road accidents caused by fatigue.
The team also conferred on Prof. Bunkure an Honorary Membership of the FRSC Special Marshal Corps in recognition of his support for community service and commitment to initiatives that promote road safety. The honour, they noted, is expected to further strengthen collaboration between the University and the Corps in advancing road safety awareness and related community development programmes.
