Operatives of the Zamfara State Police Command have neutralized a notorious bandit leader and arrested three suspects during a fierce gun battle in Gummi Local Government Area. The successful operation also led to the destruction of a criminal camp and the recovery of multiple firearms and motorcycles.

The breakthrough was disclosed in a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Zamfara State Command, Gusau.

According to DSP Yazid the operation was executed on June 9, 2026, at about 6:30 PM by operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit, led by CSP Usman Halilu Modibbo, the Divisional Police Officer for Bukkuyum Division. Acting on credible intelligence that armed bandits were sighted around the outskirts of Birisawa village, the police team launched a coordinated raid on the area.

“Upon arriving at the location, the police team engaged the armed criminals in a fierce gun duel. The tactical precision of the operatives resulted in the neutralization of the gang’s leader, while three other suspects were successfully apprehended at the scene.” He stated

He noted that several other members of the gang managed to escape into a nearby forest, carrying varying degrees of gunshot injuries. Following the encounter, the operatives destroyed the bandits’ camp and recovered three firearms alongside five operational motorcycles.

The police command has launched an aggressive manhunt to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects. The command also reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining these operations to deny criminal elements safe havens and ensure the absolute safety and security of all residents in the state.
