A total of 50 female students of Ahmadu Bello University have honoured the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, with a large-scale string art portrait of him as he marked one year in office.
Abdulmalik Ibrahim, a 400-Level Computer Science Student, who made the much-admired string art portrait of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was the arrowhead of the singular gesture.
Okonjo-Iweala is the Director-General, World Trade Organization (WTO). She was presented with the string art portrait after delivering the university convocation lecture last January.
In celebrating Prof Ahmed for marking one in office as Vice-Chancellor, Ibrahim brought together 50 female students, who each contributed thread by thread to create one unified string art portrait of the Vice-Chancellor.
String art is where computer science, mathematics, and art intersect.
It involves using algorithms and mathematical calculations to determine accurate thread iterations across a board, which, when executed correctly, gradually forms a desired image.
The celebration took place at the Faculty of Science Lecture Theatre 2 on Saturday, 16th May, 2026, with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof Raymond B Bako and Dean of Students, Prof Sahalu B Junaidu, in attendance.
Others present were Director, DLC, Prof MB Mu’azu; Director, IAIICT, Prof EA Adedokun; and Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Auwalu Umar.
Ibrahim described the event as a “collaborative art-making session”. It was also a symbol of creativity, unity, and positive student engagement within the university community, he said.
“Prof Adamu Ahmed had just marked his one year in office as the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University.
“We felt it was the perfect moment to come together and create something meaningful in his honour.
“Beyond celebrating his leadership, the project was also a way for us to showcase creativity, collaboration, and innovation within the university community”, he stated.
