Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council for Ahmadu Bello University, Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, has emerged winner of the Hallmarks of Labour (HLF) award for ‘Excellence in Leadership and Good Governance’.

A statement from the Public Affairs Directorate ,office of the Vice Chancellor said the award is in recognition of his “immense contributions to leadership and good governance” from which Nigeria has greatly benefitted.

This has set him apart as a ‘Great Nigerian Role Model’, according to the Executive Secretary, Hallmarks of Labour Foundation, Patricia Otuedon-Arawore (Chief).

Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, CFR, will be presented with the award at Lagos Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos at 4:00pm on Saturday, 18th April, 2026.

The award presentation, according to the Executive Secretary, is the highlight of the Foundation’s 29th anniversary.

Meanwhile, the Senate, Management, staff, and students of Ahmadu Bello University congratulated its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council on the recognition by the Hallmarks of Labour Foundation.

A letter congratulating the awardee, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, said Yayale’s selection for the “prestigious award is a fitting recognition of a lifetime dedicated to the service of our nation”.

Prof Ahmed stressed that Yayale’s distinguished tenure as the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation institutionalised reforms and mentored a generation of public servants.

The Vice-Chancellor also stated that Yayale’s career has been defined by integrity and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

“Furthermore, as a respected holder of traditional titles, you have masterfully bridged the gap between modern governance and our rich cultural heritage.

“You represent the finest blend of the technocrat and the traditional leader – serving as a stabilising force in times of national challenge, most notably through your diplomatic mediation in the ASUU crisis and other critical sectors of our national life”, he stated.

The Vice-Chancellor prayed that God would continue to preserve Mahmud Yayale Ahmed in good health and wisdom for the benefit of Nigeria and humanity at large.
