The Management of Ahmadu Bello University has planned a one-day symposium for the newly promoted professors.

It is only for those whose professorial appointments were announced from May, 2025 to May, 2026.

The Registrar, Rabiu Samaila, disclosed this in an invitation to all affected professors for participation.

The event, according to him, was basically to acquaint the new professors with the expectations associated with the esteemed position.

The training programme is to take place from 8:30 am prompt on Thursday, 21st May, 2026.

The symposium will be held at the Conference Hall, ACENPEE, opposite College of Medical Sciences, Main Campus, Samaru, ABU, Zaria.

The Registrar explained that the symposium was in recognition of the esteemed rank as a reflection of years of dedication to teaching, research, and community service.

“While this is the highest academic designation, it does not mark the end but the beginning of an academic journey that entails greater responsibilities”, he stressed.

He said holders were expected to sustain their momentum and maximize their potential to a higher standard.

This, he also explained, should be for the benefit of themselves, the university, and broader academic community at both national and international levels.

The one-day symposium is to be facilitated by a distinguished panel of renowned national and international scholars who will highlight the expectations associated with the esteemed position.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, will declare the event open by giving opening remarks.

According to a programme for the symposium, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof Raymond B Bako, is among the facilitators for the event.

Prof Bako, also a Centre Leader, Africa Centre of Excellence on New Pedagogies in Engineering Education (ACENPEE), will speak on ‘Professors as Academic Leaders’.

The Centre Leader, Africa Centre of Excellence on Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology (ACENTDFB), Prof YKE Ibrahim, will also give talk on ‘Research Teams and Themes’.

Prof E O Balogun, Coordinator, Intellectual Property and Technology Office (IPTTO) will speak on ‘Grant Seeking and Management’, while Prof M A Ibrahim, Deputy Director, Directorate of Research and Innovation, will talk on ‘Publication and Visibility’.

‘Institutional and Corporate Partnerships’ is a paper to be delivered by Prof Bamidele Adebisi, MBE, Head of the Smart Infrastructure and Industry Research (SIIR) Group, Department of Engineering, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK.

Prof Harry de Koning, Head of Parasite Biochemistry and Pharmacology (Parasitology), School of Infection and Immunity, University of Glasgow, UK, will also speak.

Koning is expected to give a lecture at the one-day symposium on ‘Academic Collaborations and Networking’.

The event will be rounded off with a wrap up session and closing remarks by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Advancement, Research and Innovation, Prof Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi; and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof Bello Sabo respectively.
