Ahmadu Bello University has constituted an eight-member Steering Committee for the take-off of the newly created Directorate of Environmental Management with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof Bello Sabo, as Chairman.

The University Governing Council had during its 215th Regular Meeting on 16th and 17th April, 2026 approved the creation of the Directorate of Environmental Management (DEM) from the University Health Services (UHS).

A statement from the public affairs directorate office of the Vice Chancellor said the Directorate was created to provide all environmental services such as sanitation, waste management, landscaping, and many others, allowing the UHS to focus on healthcare.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, approved the constitution of the committee to make appropriate recommendations for the take-off of the Directorate.

Prof Ahmed pointed out that UHS, historically, managed healthcare, environmental services, sanitation, waste management, and landscaping.

Managing these environmental responsibilities, he however said, had become increasingly difficult for the University Health Services (UHS).

Specifically, the committee is expected to create an organisational structure for the new Directorate in line with its mandate as provided in the concept paper.

It is to also propose a Management Board, including membership and terms of reference, to carry out oversight function over the Directorate.

Furthermore, the committee is mandated to suggest the reallocation of all resources and assets of the former UHS and advise any other matters to ensure the Directorate’s smooth take-off and sustenance.

Members of the committee include the Director, University Health Services; NAERLS’s Prof Johnson Onyigbe; and Prof Usman A Kibon of the Department of Geography and Environmental Management.

They also include Malam Dalhatu Salihu of the Human Resources Administration Department, and representatives of the Bursar and Chief Internal Auditor, Sharehu Salisu Biye and Haruna I Mohammed respectively.

Ibrahim Tanimu of the Human Resources Administration Department is the Secretary of the committee.
