Students of Senior Course 48 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji, on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, commenced the presentation phase of Exercise Military History and Campaign Analysis (MHCA) Case Study 2026 at the AVM AO Ogundana Officers’ Mess.
A statement signed by Major Emmanuel Onoja Public Relations Officer Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Nigeria said the exercise is designed to enable students to analyse selected historical military operations and campaigns with a view to identifying lessons applicable to contemporary military operations. It also seeks to enhance their understanding of operational art and strengthen their capacity to develop and execute campaign plans in a joint operational environment.
Declaring the presentation phase open, the Director, Department of Joint Studies, AFCSC, Brigadier General MM Abu, emphasised the importance of critically examining historical campaigns beyond mere narratives in order to identify the factors that shaped their outcomes and the lessons relevant to current and future military operations.
He urged the students to assess the relationship between political and military objectives, campaign design, command and control, intelligence, joint integration and operational adaptation in their assigned case studies. He also highlighted the need to examine the influence of diversity factors such as ethnicity, religion, language and culture on operational effectiveness and population support.
The Director further charged the students to ensure that their analyses were evidence-based and focused on drawing practical lessons applicable to contemporary security challenges, particularly counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations, intelligence-driven activities, and joint and inter-agency operations.
Highlights of the exercise included presentations and interactive sessions by the students and drawing lessons from selected historical campaigns.
