The Federal University of Education (FUE), Zaria, has taken a major step towards ensuring a more reliable water supply across the campus with the installation of a 50kWh solar power system at the University’s main water treatment plant.
A statement signed by Sani Lawal maqarphy media aide to the VC, said the project, executed under the directive of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure, was undertaken to address persistent water challenges arising from dependence on the national grid and the high cost of diesel used to power the water facility.
The solar power installation will provide uninterrupted energy for water pumping, filtration and distribution, thereby improving water supply to students’ hostels, staff quarters, academic buildings and other facilities within the University.
The solar project comprises two 25kWh Felicity Solar Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries with a combined storage capacity of 50kWh, twin Felicity Solar Hybrid Inverters integrated with a dual Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) system, as well as a central breaker panel and an advanced Battery Management System (BMS).
The University Management has also commenced additional measures to further improve the efficiency and capacity of the water treatment plant as part of its broader strategy to guarantee a sustainable and reliable water supply across the campus.
In addition, plans are underway to extend solar power installations to other strategic facilities within the University, particularly the University Clinic and the Students’ Recreational Centre, to enhance service delivery and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.
The project forms part of the Vice-Chancellor’s commitment to providing sustainable infrastructure and improving the welfare of staff and students through innovative strategies.
