    The Zamfara state First Lady,, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, and Chairperson of the State Drug Control Committee, has issued a powerful rallying cry for a multi-sectoral alliance to eradicate drug abuse and illicit trafficking within the state.

    Speaking at the JB Yakubu Secretariat in Gusau to commemorate the 2026 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, she emphasized that the escalating threat of synthetic substances requires both innovative policy responses and an resolute commitment from every segment of society.

    This was contained in a statement signed by Rabi Yusuf chief press secretary office of the state first lady issued to newsmen.

    It said Themed “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” the event served as the culmination of an intensive, week-long campaign led by the Office of the First Lady. Throughout the week, outreach teams mobilized across schools, markets, and local communities to explain the dangers of substance abuse.

    Her Excellency lauded the collaborative efforts of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), security forces, healthcare professionals, and traditional and religious leaders, whose partnership has been instrumental in driving this awareness movement.

    Addressing the gathering, Her Excellency framed drug abuse as a fundamental threat to the socio-economic fabric, security, and stability of Zamfara State. She maintained that while law enforcement must take a decisive stance against drug traffickers, those struggling with addiction require a balanced approach centered on compassion, professional medical care, and rehabilitation.

    In a landmark development for the state’s healthcare infrastructure, she announced that the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal has approved the construction of a modern drug rehabilitation center. “This facility is designed to provide comprehensive treatment, counseling, and long-term support for those seeking a path to recovery.” She stated

    The seminar served as a platform for rigorous dialogue, featuring expert presentations on emerging drug trends and the essential roles that families, educators, and community leaders play in prevention. Engaging with a diverse audience that included top government officials including members of the state executive council, civil society groups, and youth representatives, the First Lady challenged the younger generation to become proactive ambassadors for positive living.

    She emphasized that the fight against drugs is not merely a government mandate but a collective responsibility to protect the future of Zamfara. The event concluded with a renewed pledge from all stakeholders to sustain these awareness initiatives and work toward a safer, healthier, and drug-free future for all citizens.
