Kano state Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been honoured with the prestigious Award of Excellence in Security Governance by the Institute of Security and Strategic Studies (ISSS), in recognition of his commitment to strengthening security governance, promoting community safety, supporting security institutions, and advancing strategic approaches to crime prevention and peacebuilding in Kano State and the wider North-West sub-region.

A statement signed by Signed Sani Abba Yola,Director, Special Duties ,Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs said the award was presented at the North-West Conference on Community Security Management and Crime Prevention, organised by the Institute of Security and Strategic Studies in Kaduna State.

It said the conference brought together government officials, security and intelligence agencies, traditional and religious leaders, academics, researchers, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to deliberate on emerging security challenges and practical approaches to building safer, more resilient, and peaceful communities across the North-Western states of Nigeria.

According to the Institute, the recognition followed a professional assessment of security governance and leadership, with particular consideration given to commitment to public safety, support for security institutions, community engagement, crime prevention, institutional coordination, responsiveness to emerging security threats, and the promotion of peace and stability.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was represented at the occasion by the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, FISS, who expressed the Governor’s appreciation to the Institute of Security and Strategic Studies for the recognition.

The Commissioner described the award as a significant honour and an encouragement to the Kano State Government to sustain and strengthen its efforts towards protecting lives and property, enhancing community safety, and promoting peace and stability across the state.

Comrade Waiya further stated that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has continued to work closely with security agencies, traditional institutions, religious leaders, community leaders, civil society organisations, and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen the peace and security architecture of Kano State.

He noted that effective security governance requires not only the efforts of security agencies but also the active participation and cooperation of communities and other stakeholders, stressing the importance of intelligence sharing, community engagement, early intervention, youth engagement, and institutional collaboration in preventing crime and addressing emerging security challenges.

The Commissioner also said the recognition of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf should serve as an encouragement to leaders across the North-West to intensify efforts towards strengthening community-based security initiatives, intelligence development, crime prevention, youth engagement, and strategic partnerships with security institutions.

In his keynote presentation at the conference, Dr. Muhammad Ali emphasised the need for an integrated and community-based approach to security governance, arguing that sustainable peace could only be achieved through effective collaboration between communities and security institutions.

He further advocated the establishment and strengthening of structured early-warning and early-response mechanisms, through which communities and security agencies can work together to identify emerging threats, respond promptly to security concerns, and prevent conflicts from escalating.

The conference ended with a call for stronger collaboration and sustained partnerships between communities, security institutions, government authorities, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders across the North-Western states, towards building safer, peaceful, and resilient communities
