The Department of Finance, Faculty of Management Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, has held its 2nd international conference.
A statement from the public affairs directorate office of the VC said the conference, with the theme; “Financial Resilience: Navigating Technology Disruptions: Global Risk and Sustainable Development in an Era of Global Economic Uncertainty”, was held today, Wednesday 5th August, 2026.
It took place at the CBN Centre for Economics and Finance, Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, praised the department and the organising committee for the conference and for choosing a theme that speaks directly to the moment Nigerians find themselves in.
Prof Ahmed, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof Bello Sabo, said Nigeria’s capital market was at a point where digital infrastructure, from electronic trading platforms to blockchain-based settlement pilots, was no longer experimental, it was operational.
He said the task ahead was to make sure that infrastructure could absorb pressure without breaking, and that institutions regulating it continued to build the supervisory capacity to match the pace of change.
Prof Ahmed urged the department to continue to serve as the university’s designated hub for both conventional and Islamic finance scholarship.
Earlier in an address of welcome, the Head, Department of Finance, Prof Ibrahim Mohammed, said as a department, they were committed to bridging the gap between academia and industry.
Mohammed noted that the world of today placed unprecedented uncertainties, hence the timeliness of the theme of the conference.
He expressed confidence that the insight generated would lead to policy formulation.
In a remark, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof Ahmed Sheikh Abdullah, noted that the conference showed how intellectually alert and academically sound the Department of Finance is.
Represented by Prof A K Adamu, the Chairman said any department without organised academic discourse is not worth its relevance.
In a keynote speech, the President, CFA Society, Lagos, Nigeria, Dr Razaq Ahmed, said countries around the world were showcasing the need for them to exercise nationalism in terms of resources and in all aspects.
Dr Razaq maintained that globally, population of some countries had stagnated to an extent due to restrictions on immigration.
In a goodwill message, the Emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, affirmed that by organising the conference, the university had proven its worth in providing academic leadership in proffering solutions to some global economic crisis.
The Emir, who was represented by the Jagaban Zazzau Abdullahi Ismaila Ahmed, congratulated the department for organising the commendable initiative.
In another goodwill message, the Vice Chairman, Capital Market Academics of Nigeria, Prof Seth Akutson, congratulated the department for the significant milestone.
Akutson said CMAN had always been contributing to policy implementation by promoting the mentorship of younger academics.
On his side, the Managing Director, Jaiz Bank Nigeria PLC, Dr Haruna Musa, said the bank was not just a competitor to conventional banking, but provided a complimentary service.
Dr Musa, represented by Dr AbdulWahab Sadiq, congratulated the department and commended them for coming up with the unique initiative.
The event was attended by scholars, policy makers, captains of industry and students.
