The Kano State Police Command wishes to inform the public that it has received a formal petition dated 17th June 2026 from _Nakudu Law Partners_, solicitors to Mrs. Nusaiba Rabiu Dan Sheriff, regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of her daughter, Late Maimuna Sani Salisu, a JSS 2 boarding student of St. Louis Secondary School, Kano.

SUMMARY OF PETITION
According to the petition, on 13th June 2026 at approximately 7:20 pm, the school authorities informed the deceased’s parents that she was ill and had been taken to International Clinic, Kano for medical attention. Her elder sister was immediately dispatched to the hospital. Upon arrival at about 8:19 pm, she was informed by the attending doctor that the deceased had been confirmed dead. The deceased was buried on 14th June 2026 in accordance with Islamic rites.
The petitioners alleged conflicting accounts regarding the cause of death. While the school initially stated the deceased died of an asthma attack after being late to the mosque, other testimonies received by the family suggest she was punished by senior students through flogging and forced prolonged kneeling for refusing to sweep, which allegedly worsened her condition.
The family expressed concern over the conflicting narratives and requested a thorough police investigation to establish the true cause of death and ensure accountability.
POLICE ACTION & JOINT INVESTIGATION
Upon receipt of the petition on the death of the 13-year old student, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, SFIPMA, MNIM, MNIPS, MASIS, directed that the matter be treated with utmost diligence, transparency, and strict compliance with the rule of law, in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s pillars of Intelligence-Led Policing, Strict Accountability, and Human Rights Compliance.
Consequently, a Special Investigation Panel (SIP) has been constituted and is led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, DCP Shehu Idris. In the interest of transparency and inter-agency collaboration, officials from the Kano State Ministry of Justice have been included as members of the Panel to provide legal guidance and oversight throughout the process.
The SIP commenced investigations immediately. As part of preliminary inquiries, the following persons have been formally invited and are cooperating with the Panel:
i. Three (3) Teachers of St. Louis Secondary School – one male and two females
ii. Three (3) Students of the school – all females and senior students of the deceased
iii. Two (2) Witnesses – two females with relevant information on the incident
Statements have been obtained and medical, forensic, and other evidentiary processes are ongoing to establish the exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding it.
ASSURANCE TO THE PUBLIC
The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, assures the family of the deceased, the school community, and the general public that the investigation will be thorough, impartial, and transparent. Anyone found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law, while those exonerated will be cleared accordingly. The findings and recommendations of the Panel will be made public at the conclusion of the investigation.
The Command appeals to members of the public, especially the school community, to volunteer credible information that can assist the investigation. All information provided will be treated with strict confidentiality.
The Command commiserates with the family of Late Maimuna Sani Salisu and prays that Almighty Allah grants her soul eternal rest and the family the fortitude to bear the loss.
